In the mass market world of television broadcasting and viewing there are innumerous options that people can use to improve their television viewing on TV’s and computers alike.  Much of the jargon that comes with the different types of tuners can be quite confusing.  Essentially, tuners all work in the same way no matter what kind they are.  The biggest difference between say an analog and digital tuner is the picture and sound quality that the viewer will receive. 
 
The Basics of an Analog Tuner
 
Analog tuners are the oldest form of tuners on the market today.  Essentially, they have been used with television viewing for decades.  An analog TV tuner is designed to decode the analog signals that were sent over RF (radio frequency) cables.  In years past, all television was analog and the tuner, often referred to as bunny ears or antennas were used to unscramble signals to improve picture quality.  Most analog televisions are the ones with the large and bulky tubes on the back.  If you have an older model television, it likely uses an analog tuner to receive broadcasting.  While analog services still work, the picture quality is normally very, very poor. 
 
Additionally, an analog tuner is not able to transmit high definition television.  In fact, analog tuners and receivers used today will only be able to receive SD (standard definition) pictures. 
 
If you can think back to the days when you would lose your programming, or a television show would suddenly go off of the air, then you remember another disadvantage to using analog tuners.  Analog tuners are notorious for losing their signal, which means that you lose your picture. 
 
The Basics of a Digital Tuner
 
In today’s technological age, everything has become digital.  Digital tuners have virtually replaced analog tuners on all new television equipment.  The single most and greatest benefit to using a digital tuner in place of the old analog tuners is that the picture quality is improved tenfold.  All HDTV products, whether they are laptops, monitors or televisions utilize digital tuners in their products to help promote the best picture quality.  AN older analog television – even with an HDTV tuner accessory either would be unable to transmit the digital material, or would not be able to improve the picture quality very much. 
 
Digital tuners can be external, and can be used with all sorts of digital equipment today.  Many people today will purchase an external digital tuner or HDTV tuner to hook up to a computer monitor in order to make it TV ready. 
 
The future is completely digital.  While analog tuners worked well in the time period they were invented, today they have been deemed virtually useless in comparison to HDTV and digital tuners.  Experts admit that as more and more television programs are broadcasted in HDTV, analog will quickly become a thing of the past.
